Smart Packing Hacks for High-Altitude Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park sounds like a straightforward hike until you’re actually on the trail — steep volcanic slopes, altitude that sneaks up on you, and terrain that shifts from dry dust to thick mud within a few hundred meters. Packing right for it makes the difference between a trek you remember for the gorillas and one you remember for how miserable your feet were.

Layer for a Morning That Changes Fast

Treks typically start early, in cool mountain air that can feel close to freezing at higher elevations, then warm quickly as the sun rises and the hiking intensifies. A base layer, a fleece or light insulating layer, and a waterproof outer shell packed down small in your daypack lets you adjust as conditions shift, rather than carrying a single heavy jacket that’s either too much or too little for most of the day.

Footwear Matters More Than Almost Anything Else

    • Waterproof hiking boots, broken in beforehand: the terrain alternates between dry volcanic soil and genuinely thick mud, and new boots on trek day is a reliable way to end up with blisters partway through a multi-hour hike.
    • Gaiters if you have them: they keep mud and stinging nettles, which are common along the lower trail sections, from working their way into your boots and pant legs.
    • A trekking pole: porters can often provide one locally, but bringing your own means it’s the right height and already comfortable in your hand before you’re relying on it for a steep volcanic slope.

The Small Items That Save a Trek

    • Gardening gloves: stinging nettles line parts of the lower trail, and a simple pair of gloves protects your hands far better than trying to avoid every plant.
    • A dry bag for your camera: sudden rain showers are common in the park, and a lightweight dry bag protects gear without adding real weight to your pack.
    • Snacks and electrolytes: treks can run anywhere from two to seven hours depending on where the gorilla family happens to be that day, and there’s no way to know in advance which end of that range you’ll get.

    What to Leave Behind

Rwanda has banned single-use plastic bags nationwide, including in luggage, so pack reusable bags or containers rather than assuming you can rely on plastic zip bags for wet or dirty gear. Bulky camera lenses and tripods also tend to be more hassle than they’re worth on a trek that requires both hands free for balance on steep, uneven ground.

Booking and Permit Logistics Worth Knowing Early

Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda are limited and need to be booked well ahead of a trip, often months in advance during peak season, and the cost is a significant part of the overall trip budget. Building the permit into your planning early, rather than treating it as a detail to sort out on arrival, avoids the disappointment of showing up to find the trek you wanted is already fully booked.

For official permit information and current requirements, the Rwanda Development Board’s tourism site is the authoritative source to check before booking.
